Shared Living in the Cities of Tomorrow

Driving Innovation, Impact & Change.

About Event

Shared Living in the Cities of Tomorrow: Driving Innovation, Impact & Change is an industry event that took place during the World Urban Forum (WUF 11), which was organised by UN Habitat, City of Katowice & Polish Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy from June 26th to 30th in Katowice, Poland.

The event explored how we can drive innovation, impact and change in cities of tomorrow with shared living through stimulating conversations, collaboration and insights into the future of sustainable and community-centred urbanisation.

As experts in the specialist residential real estate sector – specifically in shared living – we at Coliving Ventures are actively supporting the sustainable acceleration, growth and consolidation of the coliving industry, and how we work with our partners to drive this evolution and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies.

For this event we have partnered up with GZM - Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia and Dąbrowa Basin (Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia) and CINIBA - Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library (Centrum Informacji Naukowej i Biblioteka Akademicka) to bring shared living concepts to wider audiences of WUF11.

For Whom?

As specialist real estate assets merge and blend, the worlds of residential, hospitality, office and commercial real estate are colliding. This means new hybridised products are coming to market and a multi-stakeholder approach to collaboration and consolidation is needed.

This event was organised for specialist real estate developers, operators, investors, service providers and public officials looking to understand these innovative asset classes.

We were joined by high-level decision-makers, urban planners, city-makers, public stakeholders, entrepreneurs, business leaders, investors, thought-leaders and other professionals who are passionate about shared living and innovative and sustainable models of urbanisation.

By participating in this industry event, attendees had a chance to dive deeper into how shared living is transforming the future of our cities and communities.

Panel 1: How Shared Living Models are Shaping Innovation in Real Estate

Multifamily, Build to Rent (BTR), Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA), senior living, nomad coliving, hybrid hospitality, cohousing … all of these specialist residential real estate models stem from the same family of shared living. This panel explored how these typologies differ and how the worlds of these specialist asset classes are merging to shape innovation within real estate. Our panellists consisted of industry partners that come from different real estate industries including BTR, PBSA and coliving. They shared their specific industry knowledge about the innovations and challenges in each of their fields.

With employees demanding that the future of their work styles become increasingly flexible and hybrid, employers and their office spaces – and where they allow their employees to work – need to adapt accordingly. This panel explored the newest consumer trends, desires and demands that are driving change within real estate.

Panel 3: Harnessing the Power of Impact & Sustainability with Shared Living

The shared living sector has a big potential to contribute positively to the real estate sector and our planet as an environmentally and socially sustainable housing model. With close relationships to their tenants, shared living developers and operators have the opportunity and the responsibility to enhance the wellbeing of their residents and contribute positively to local economies and neighbourhoods. This panel explored how shared living businesses that are thinking deeply about the different stakeholders within their ecosystems, deliver a positive social, economic and environmental impact for these individuals, their communities and wider neighbourhoods and cities.

Other Events at WUF 11

On June 30th, Coliving Ventures also hosted a networking session during the official programme of WUF11. This event explored sustainable forms of urban living and housing, with a specific focus on shared living models including cohousing, intentional communities, regenerative villages, coliving, build to rent, purpose built student accommodation, senior living and other communal living typologies.

The networking event was facilitated using a ‘World Café’ format, which is a powerful social technology for engaging people in conversations that matter, offering an effective antidote to the fast-paced fragmentation and lack of connection in today’s world.
We structured the networking session in a way that we could share our internal R&D as well as facilitate smaller thematic group discussions where specialists could dive deeper into categories such as sustainability, impact, ESG, social value, architecture, technology, community, branding, marketing and more.

Moreover, on June 29th Coliving Awards 2022 took place at Kino Kosmos.
